Work to replace the bridges to and from Harkers Island in Carteret County is being accelerated by having crews work at night.

State Department of Transportation official said Friday that contract crews were to begin working between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday through Friday. Daytime work already takes place every day, except Sundays.

Traffic on the existing bridges will remain open during construction, but drivers will continue to encounter periodic, but short, lane closures.

The reason for the accelerated work schedule is the contractor needs to get as much work done in the water as possible because of a moratorium prohibiting any work in water from April through October, according to officials. The contractor will move materials and build a temporary work bridge that can then be used to move materials to the new bridge under construction.
