SALEM — Dirt is being cleared for construction of the Salem Rotary Family Sports Center located on an acre of land at Waterworth Memorial Park.
The Rotary Club of Salem, founded in 1921, announced in April the gift being given to commemorate the service club’s 100th year.
For the past century, Salem Rotarians have made an enduring impact in the community.
To leave a permanent remembrance of their Centennial, the Rotary Club is creating a special mini park designed to be a multigenerational, multifunctional family gathering place to socialize, practice sporting skills, and stay fit.
The Salem Rotary Family Sports Center will be located just north of the Salem Community Center and will include a practice soccer field, sand and grass volleyball courts, a cross-fit area, two batting cages, two golf practice cages, a large children’s playground area, a central gazebo, and several grassy areas for play.
“We have already raised more than $150,000 to build the park, and we are moving dirt this fall to get ready for the sports equipment,” said Dr. Peter Apicella, Chairman of the Centennial Committee. “With tremendous support of Rotarians and community members, we will soon have a wonderful place for children, parents, and grandparents to spend time outdoors staying fit and socializing under the gazebo.”
To raise funds for the Children’s playground, the Club is having a special “Golden Ticket” Raffle with $10,000 in prizes (250 tickets). Each $100 ticket has an opportunity to win $5,000, $2,500, $1,500, or $1,000 prizes.
The winner will be announced at Salem Rotary’s Centennial Dinner at the Salem Golf Club on Nov. 20. The winner need not be present to win.
