Six Daily Gazette staff members were recognized last week for their winning entries in the New York Publishers’ Association 2020 Awards for Excellence Competition. Indiana Nash, John Thorpe, Erica Miller, and Peter Barber won in the Distinguished News Supplement category, Mike MacAdam in the Distinguished Sports Column Writing category, and Mark Mahoney in the Distinguished Editorial Writing category.

According to the Publishers’ Association judges, Nash, Thorpe, Miller and Barber’s package “Rising to the Challenge” consisted of “easy-to-digest, engaging Q&A interviews and photos of more than 30 local residents in one of four COVID-related categories.”

Gazette editor Miles Reed said, “When the pandemic hit in March and April 2020, we had to change a whole bunch of our coverage plans for the balance of the year. Our team of Indiana Nash and John Thorpe stepped up to fill the void with a compelling special section on the everyday heroes of the COVID-19 crisis.”

He added, “Our photographers Erica Miller and Peter Barber really came through for the section too. At a time when most New Yorkers were working from home and mostly staying in, Erica and Peter were out in the community every day, documenting life in the pandemic.”

The judges wrote that MacAdam’s “A Seat in the Bleachers” columns were “straightforward, friendly and conversational, with details that enable readers to envision the scene and the people.”

They praised Mahoney’s editorial writing, too: “Newspapers serve their communities by providing readable, informative, well-researched and reasoned editorials that touch on local concerns and don’t just criticize, but also recommend courses of action. These entries meet all those criteria.”

Said Reed, “Mark Mahoney and Mike MacAdam are consistently among the best journalists in America and 2020 was no exception. Year in and year out, Mark and Mike do top-notch work no matter what’s going on locally or in the world, including a pandemic.”

All winners of the 2020 Awards for Excellence competition will be honored at the Awards for Excellence Reception and Banquet.
