By Friends of Plumas County Animals
Today we signed a formal Agreement with Plumas Unified School District to begin purchase of their surplus building for our new rescue site. Friends now has 30 days to get estimates on repairs and decide if this project is within our means or not.
We were able to meet with the PUSD Maintenance Director at the building and had an electrician look at the heaters and the breaker box. Seems all is good in that department and aside from cleaning of the electrical heaters, the system seems fine. Whew… We were also able to access the attic area and although the building definitely will need a new roof, it does not seem to be leaking now and that major repair can be dealt with at a later time. Dodged that bullet too…
On Thursday we will have a plumber come in to give us estimates on plumbing for a new utility sink, the washer hookup and plumbing for the propane heaters and the on demand hot water heater. Propane companies will be contacted and estimates obtained for tank installation and hook ups. After that we will get a pest control report and estimates for any work that may need to be done to correct insect damage.
Our volunteers and Board are so very excited to be living the dream of creating a “home of our own.” To know that improvements and the care and the love put into the rescue will never be taken from us again is HUGE!! Many thanks to the PUSD board for accepting our low-ball bid! Many thanks to everyone who contacted the PUSD board with letters and phone calls of support. Many thanks to those who are sending us donations to start the project and, therefore, are helping us be confident in our decision and direction. And many, many thanks to the one person who made me believe we could actually do this huge endeavor—Dave Heppler. Without Dave’s unwavering support for our rescue, his love of animals and his generosity, Friends would never have been able to buy the building and start this adventure. You astound me Dave!
When our 30 day agreement is up and when escrow closes, Friends will be having an Open House at the new site. I will keep in touch and let everyone know when that will happen so that you can come and share in the joy of building a new rescue with our volunteers. You will get to see the that everything there is pure potential; a diamond in the rough; one in a million–you get the idea. It’s a hot mess right now, but will be fantastic and only get better with time.
We are all so grateful for this opportunity to serve the animals of our county again. Thank you all.
