With the city of Arcata commencing its 2021 paving project and continuing its asphalt grind out and inlay project work, residents are being advised of road closures as these projects progress.
Arcata city engineer Netra Khatri told the Times-Standard residents on streets that will be treated on are being notified ahead of work starting to allow them to keep vehicles off the site and plan ahead.
“Since the work is being done on local streets, we have to work closely with residents,” he said. “Sometimes some residents are home and some are not. So we try to work with them and try to plan the work around that. Signs are also installed on streets for at least a minimum of 48 hours in advance so that they know not to park there on the day of paving.”
Pavement work is scheduled Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. through 5 p.m., with work being extended from 7 a.m. through 6 p.m. on some days.
The pavement project is expected to cost around $389,000 and is paid for from gas tax and SB 1 funding, according to Khatri.
The city encourages commuters and residents to follow all safety and traffic control markers at project sites.
Pavement work began on Monday on Crescent Way and Chester Avenue. The next phases of the paving project are scheduled to commence in December or early January, as outlined in a city press release.
Early 2022 paving work is also currently scheduled for Charles Avenue, Margaret Lane, Dorothy Court and Patrick Court.
The areas being worked on as part of the pavement project were determined by monitoring conditions of local roads and a regular schedule of work areas.
“We have a pavement management plan in place and we use that as a guiding document. We also inspect the streets, and based on that we prepare a list of projects for the upcoming year,” Khatri explained.
Weather permitting, all pavement project work is slated to be complete by early March 2022.
As part of the 2021 Arcata asphalt grind out and inlay project, work is still scheduled for sections of the city from F to K streets and from 11th to 14th streets. This project is focused on improvements to utility valves, manholes, roadway grinding and paving.
A city press release states project work is complete at sites on Union Street between 11th street and Samoa Boulevard, on F Street between 11th and 14th streets, and on 12th street between G and K streets.
The project will observe similar work hours as the pavement project. Work is expected to conclude by the end of the year.
Khatri pointed to the importance of maintaining local throughways in good condition.
“Streets are important for everybody, not only for us but for emergency services, for police, garbage trucks, transit and everybody who drives. Streets are a critical need for any city and we have given high priority to our projects for safety reasons,” the city engineer said.
