Interpersonal relationships affect how work gets done. Overnight, the COVID-19 lockdowns changed the way millions of people interact. Cubicles and offices emptied, and the home office became the operations base for employees. Zoom, GoToMeeting and Webex apps became the sole source of interaction; even after the pandemic subsides, their use will remain an integral part of the workplace.
Being a connected, engaged teammate requires more than a strong Wi-Fi signal and a home office. There must be a commitment to maintaining the same level of effort you put into your work despite limited face-to-face contact. Instead of thriving on the energy of the team, you must self-motivate. How? Employ the authors’ “3P Model.”
1. Productivity – Getting the right stuff done involves treating your home office as an extension of your business office. Maintain the same mindset and schedule (including breaks) you had when teammates were just a few feet away.
Make sure your priorities line up with those of your manager and the team. Use the online meetings to clarify expectations. When communicating via instant message or email, lead the subject line with timeframe (e.g., Need by…, No rush, Need to talk…, Are you available…, etc.). Sharing your calendar helps, too, because the team can tie their work into the what-and-when of your schedule.
2. Proactivity – Don’t be the wallflower. Prepare for meetings and individual conversations by doing your homework. Also decide on topics you need to discuss and related questions. Whenever possible, lead conversation.
Show that you value relationships. Become a good listener. Use what you heard to ask for more information. Share information with others.
3. Potential (a corollary of 1 and 2) – When you’re isolated from your managers and teammates, it’s easy to focus on the tasks at hand. But there are other tasks – those that require building your career’s next step. Ask for your next challenge. Helping others won’t go unnoticed.
