More Than 220,000 Bridges Need Repair Work In The U.S. [Infographic] - Forbes

Last week, President Biden unveiled his plans for a gargantuan infrastructure investment totaling $2 trillion. The "once-in-a-generation" effort includes the elimination of lead piping, rebuilding 20,000 miles of roads and repairing America's 10 most economically important bridges. Biden described the program as "unlike anything we have seen or done since we built the interstate highway system and the space race decades ago", adding that it would be "the largest American jobs investment since World War II". A new American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) report further illustrates the scale of the challenge in overhauling and upgrading America's crumbling infrastructure, finding that more than 220,000 bridges across the country need repair work.

That figure encompasses 36% of bridges in the U.S. and if they were placed end to end, they would stretch for more than 6,000 miles. In 2020, there were 171.5 million daily crossings on more than 45,000 structurally deficient bridges and at the current rate, it would take more than 40 years to fix all of them. It would also cost an estimated $41.8 billion. The good news is that the number of structurally deficient bridges has declined for the last five years, though that is tempered by a trend of more bridges being downgraded from good to fair condition over the same time period. So, which U.S. states can make the unflattering claim of having the most crumbling bridges?

The ARTBA report shows that in terms of absolute numbers, Iowa has the most structurally deficient bridges out of any state with 4,571 or 19.1% of its total bridges. Pennsylvania comes second on the list with 3,353 of its bridges requiring work while Illinois rounds off the top-three with 2,374. When it comes to the share of bridges needing repair work as a percentage of total bridges, West Virginia comes first with 21% while that figure is lowest in Nevada at just 1.4%. The danger posed by structurally deficient bridges was illustrated in Italy in August 2018 when a major road viaduct collapsed during a rainstorm, killing 43 people.
