Newark, NJ - PSE&G has announced that over the next two weeks work crews will be replacing gas mains on:
North 9th Street (between Park Avenue and 7th Avenue West), North 22nd Street (between 4th Avenue and Springdale Avenue), North 21st Street (between 4th Avenue and Springdale Avenue), 22nd Street (between 19th Avenue & Springfield Avenue), 21st Street (between Nelson Place and Springdale Avenue), South 20th Street (between 18th Avenue and Springfield Avenue), 21st Street (between Springfield Avenue and Hopkins Place) South 18th Street (between Clinton Avenue and 18th Avenue), Fabyan Place (between Clinton Avenue and Nye Avenue) and Leslie Street (between Hawthorne and Clinton Avenue)
This work coincides with the utility’s citywide effort to make gas delivery to local homes and businesses safer, cleaner and more efficient. While residents and businesses may experience temporary road closures, local police officers will be on site to direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic during this time.
In addition to main installation, work crews are scheduled to replace services on:
North 5th Street (between 4th Avenue West and Park Avenue), 1st Street (between Orange Street and 2nd Street), 7th Avenue West (between 1st Street and Roseville Avenue), Roseville Avenue (between 3rd Avenue West and 4th Avenue West), Springdale Avenue (between North 9th Street and North 12th Street), Springfield Avenue (between North 9th Street and North 12th Street), North 15th Street (between Park Avenue and 4th Avenue), Montgomery Avenue (between Clinton Avenue and Avon Avenue) and 19th Avenue (between Grove Street and South 19th Street)
The project, started in August 2020, is part of PSE&G’s Gas System Modernization Program II (GSMP II) and includes the replacement of nearly 27 miles of cast iron pipes with new, more durable, plastic pipes. All work is weather dependent.
Following the installation of new mains, technicians schedule times with homeowners to connect their service to the new system, during which time customers can expect to lose service for about four hours. Gas meters will be relocated to the outside of the property, and technicians will relight all appliances and ensure that they are working properly before leaving the premises.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, and in the interest of maintaining the safety of customers, employees, and their families, PSE&G workers and PSE&G contractors follow safety protocols guided by the CDC and NJ State Department of Health, as well as all directives from the Governor’s Office and county/municipal governments. When entering homes, PSE&G technicians will be wearing personal protective equipment and will maintain physical distancing throughout the appointment. Customers are asked to help maintain a safe distance during the appointments and to allow technicians to enter through the nearest entryway in proximity to the meter set location.
