MANISTEE — Construction on various city projects continues throughout the week in Manistee.
This week excavation will start for the sanitary sewer once railroad tunneling is completed for the Headworks building.
This past week work for the Wastewater Treatment Facility included pouring tank 3 and tank 1-grade beamforming the deck for the headworks building and backfilling around the headworks building four feet below finished grade on three sides. Also, digging started for the exit pit on the east side of the tracks for tunneling.
There are currently three projects underway when it comes to the sanitary sewers and the wastewater treatment plant.
Department of Public Works director Jeff Mikula previously told the News Advocate that, "The city has three projects under construction in order to complete our Wet Weather Corrective Action Program. The three projects total over $19 million. When completed, the wet weather flows will be transported to the treatment plant and when necessary be able to store and later treat up to 6 million gallons. The projects should be completed by next August."
During this week, there will be preparations for footings on the east and northwest sides of the Headworks building, placement of a trench box for tunneling on the east side of the train tracks, the pouring of the deck slab for headworks, and putting a stone in for tank one slab.
RIVERWALK
Work on riverbank erosion and Riverwalk repairs last week included the installation of all the bedding stone between the new sidewalk and armor stone near First Street Beach, according to the city of Manistee website.
The new sidewalk near Douglas Park was cleaned up. Stones were raked out and sand was brought up to the edge of the sidewalk.
This week, work will continue with additional armor stone revetment and in the First Street parking area the wooden guardrail will be reinstalled. The First Street Beach site will be cleaned up and topsoil will be put in.
City construction on the Riverwalk adjacent to First Street Beach has been underway since May after the city approved a contract from Swidorski Bros. Excavating LLC worth $1.885 million.
The construction is necessary because in March 2020 a portion of the retaining wall at the west end of the Riverwalk collapsed.
STREETS
As far as work on streets (Jackson, Van Buren, Jefferson and Eighth streets) last week, that consisted of a new water main passing a bacteria test, according to the city website.
Other work completed included the following:
• 40 feet of new 8-inch ductile iron water main was constructed at the intersection of Washington and Jackson streets. The water will be tapped into the existing distribution system.
• 300 feet of 12-inch storm sewer, 5 catch basins and 1 manhole were constructed on Jackson Street.
• 300 cubic yards of sawdust/clay/stumps were removed from underneath Jackson Street.
This week, work to the 2021 streets project will include the contractor continuing to remove sawdust and poor subsoils from Jackson and Jefferson streets and possible construction of the remaining storm sewer or water services.
ROOF WORK, MISC.
Work on municipal roofs will also continue. Last week the work included waiting to inspect the wellhouse fascia and gutters.
Construction on Manistee City Hall consisted of working with a plumber on a city internal drain leak. The work on the city hall roof was 95% completed.
This week's work will continue on city hall and the well house, which includes waiting for an 80-foot lift to start work on Manistee Fire Department and Water Works building the week of Oct. 11.
The city hall windows are also being renovated. Those new windows will be completed and revealed to the public in the upcoming weeks.
Other work this week will include looking into options for a contractor to install gutters at city hall chambers and the Water Works building.
Preparation for the municipal marina dock replacement phase II for last week included obtaining required insurance, bonds and signing agreements from the contractor and scheduled a pre-construction meeting.
This week there will be another pre-construction meeting.
