United Bank Playbook – Open Week Work - West Virginia University Athletics - WVU Athletics

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia coach Neal Brown is going into listening mode this week in hopes of steering his 2-4 football team through its current three-game losing streak.

The coach sat down with our Tony Caridi earlier this week for his weekly United Bank Playbook segment.

"We have to reflect on what's gone well so far and, obviously, what has not worked. We need to take what we've done well, build on it and capitalize on it," Brown pointed out.

"Then, you've got to say 'What needs to be repaired? What is fixable, whether it's from personnel or scheme, let's move forward this week and start the repair process and then what do we need to readjust? Are our best players who we thought they were going into the season, and are those the people we continue to build around? Is there anything schematically we haven't done to this point that we can do that will make us better?' That's what we're doing this week," he noted.

Brown said the role of a head coach is to listen when things are not running smoothly.

"I will do a lot of listening with our staff in one-on-ones, with the leadership and the influencers on our team and get feedback. 'Hey, what do you see? What do you see our issues are? What do you think we can capitalize on moving forward?' Then, we'll put together a plan toward the end of the week, not only for TCU, but moving forward for the second half of the season," he explained.

Brown indicated this week is critical because it's important to get his current team in a better place, but also to continue to work and develop the younger players in the program who represent WVU's future.

He said he plans on scrimmaging the younger guys during the developmental portion of each practice before the team turns its sole attention to TCU beginning Thursday. The Horned Frogs have a big road game at Oklahoma this Saturday.

"We need to continue to make sure (the younger players are) continuing to get better and also we've got to get this current football team (better)," he said. "We've still got six games left. There is still a lot of football to be played. I know everything is doom and gloom right now, but one win will fix that. We've got to focus on getting better, and that's what we'll do."

Brown added, "We won't treat this bye week any differently than we do a normal bye week, even though we're struggling. We're meeting these challenges head on; we're not running from it. We've got to get better so the first thing you do is reflect."

West Virginia's Oct. 23 matchup against TCU in Fort Worth has been put on a six-day window and the game time and TV network will be announced following the conclusion of this weekend's games.

The contest will be televised on either Fox or ESPN.

West Virginia will return to Milan Puskar Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 30 to face Iowa State. Tickets for that game remain on sale through the Mountaineer Ticket Office and can be purchased by calling 1-800-WVU GAME or by logging on to WVUGAME.com.
