I was hit by a car but I'm biking to work to avoid the subway - New York Post

Henni Coetzer, 31, is a nurse at a hospital in the Financial District. She decided about a month ago to commute by bike because the subway feels unsafe.

I live in West Harlem, but my hospital has been putting me up in a hotel closer to work. My commute started getting crazy when there weren’t many trains coming. They were so packed, it was impossible to practice social distancing. It felt like a post-apocalyptic movie every time I stepped on the subway.

I have a road bike, but I didn’t usually take it to work before. In January, I was crossing the street and a turning car knocked me off my bike. I had no injuries, but it wasn’t fun. Now, the streets are pretty empty, so I feel more confident riding.

Even though there’s less car traffic, there are a lot of people out there biking who probably normally only bike for fun on the weekends, and they seem to be unaware of unspoken bike etiquette. Like, if you’re going to be slow, stay on the outer side of the lane. They’re taking their sweet time moseying along.
