Duncan Schwensohn, the senior engineer on the project, said that some concrete work will trickle over into 2021.
"I'm pretty happy with how hard everybody worked and how much we actually got done this year. It would have been nice to finish up everything, but it didn't quite work out that way, so we've got a little bit left to do next year," he said.
Crews don't have time to finish pouring concrete on one block of the street and some of the avenues and sidewalks.
"The street paving we are going to have complete through 2nd Ave. W. And we'll have to come and start there next year," Schwensohn said. "And then we'll be doing from 3rd Ave. W to 2nd Ave. W. And then we're actually going to be paving up and down the avenues."
Temporary asphalt will be put down in the meantime. Schwensohn estimates they'll have about 6-8 weeks of work in the spring. But they will close a section at a time, so he doesn't expect it to be as big of a disruption.
The underground work is pretty much done, so now they are working on paving, lighting and other finishing details for a mid-November reopening. Schwensohn said the goal is the second or third week of November.
"It's been pretty much six days a week, 10-12 hours a day since the first week in April, so I think everybody out here is kind of ready to button things up and take a breath for a little while here," he said.
And he says the snowiest October on record isn't the cause for the delay. Their location close to Lake Superior made a big difference.
"We never really got much of an accumulation of snow, so realistically 6 inches of snow is equivalent to the moisture content of maybe a half-inch rainfall. And the site can handle a half-inch rainfall no problem," Schwensohn said.
