The Department of Economic Labor and Opportunity released a fact sheet for equal pay.

It highlights the differences of earnings for men and women in the work place over the last year.

We spoke with the department and a woman-owned business to see how the pandemic impacted them.

Owner of Events North, Allison Beers, says before the pandemic she was able to put work aside once she left the office, but like many women this year she’s been forced to handle her work life from home.

Beers says, “I’m mom at that point. Now, because I am interrupted during the day or because I am doing other things sometimes I will sneak back into the office.”

She says over the last year she’s lost female employees.

She says one big factor is child care during the pandemic.

“Many more women than men have had to leave the workforce. I understand that because if I didn’t have my husband who is my bestfriend and great helper and support in equal parenting and all the work-we’d be in big trouble,” says Beers.

According to the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity’s Michigan Women in the Workforce report, from February to December of 2020 more than 136,000 women left the workforce.4d8a2dfd 477e 44fd 83f8 Ad8d12d67b6e

Director of Employment and Training for Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity, Stephanie Beckhorn says, “Thats about a 6% decline and in the same time period although men had an employment loss, they have recovered all of their job loss.”

They say women are still only making an average of 78 cents to the man’s dollar, and the disparity is even larger for women of color.

Beckhorn says, “For every man, again, in Michigan Black or African American women they only earn 65 cents to the dollar and Hispanic and Latino women earn 56 cents.”

The LEO says they’ve been working on programs through Michigan Works! to encourage women to get back to the work place and acknowledge the pay gap.

Business owners, like Allison Beers, says the most she can do right now is persevere.
