An inmate in a Jefferson County work release program died of an apparent drug overdose in the bathroom of a store where he was working, authorities said. It’s the second death of a county work release inmate this week.

About 6 p.m. Thursday the Jefferson County Detentions staff was contacted by Lakewood police about the death of 30-year-old Sean William Hayes, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

Hayes was booked into the Jefferson County jail on a probation violation on April 24. He was sentenced Monday to a 90-day work release program and transferred Wednesday to the county’s Intervention Community Corrections Services, a private, nonprofit community corrections agency in Lakewood that includes a residential program.

On Tuesday, Damion Jeffcastle White, 26, was found unresponsive in his room at the ICCS. He was pronounced dead at the scene. White was in custody since July 1 and was being held on a third-degree domestic assault charge. He was transferred to community corrections on July 14.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of the deaths. Lakewood police are conducting and investigation into Hayes’ death.
