Morgan County Sheriff Mike Carmody will be rethinking jail policies for inmates on work detail after a Jacksonville man escaped Tuesday.
“We’re going to reevaluate how we’re going to do things,” Carmody said.
Kyle D. Hoffman, 44, of 604 N. East St. fled at 5:46 p.m. Tuesday. He was re-arrested at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 200 block of South West Street.
“He basically got about 40 minutes of freedom before we found him,” Carmody said.
Hoffman, who has been housed at the Morgan County jail at 300 W. Court St. for the past three months, broke free while doing yard work around the jail.
“He has been in jail for 100 days,” Carmody said, adding that Hoffman fled west before heading south toward the Jacksonville Elks Lodge at 231 W. Morgan St.
Hoffman has several ticket violations dating to 2019 for driving an uninsured motor vehicle, driving with a suspended license and driving with an expired registration. Hoffman also is facing a charge of retail theft.
It wasn’t until he failed to appear at his court hearing on the retail theft charge that he was arrested and jailed.
“He didn’t show up so we put out a warrant for his arrest,” Carmody said.
Hoffman appeared in court Wednesday and now is facing an escape charge, which carries fines and the possibility of five years’ imprisonment. His bond has been increased from $100,000 to $150,000. He remains lodged in the Morgan County jail.
