It’s every journalist’s worst nightmare to lose a computer or phone, and recently I have my first experience with this predicament after accidentally leaving my work briefcase in the parking lot after work before driving two hours up to Leland, Michigan, for my eldest brother’s wedding.
Now, being flustered about the wedding and excited to leave work to the festivities, I found myself forgetting to put my briefcase in the car after I cleaned one of the floor pads and got into the car in a hurry. Realizing halfway home that I had left my computer sitting in the parking lot, I frantically called my boss to see if it had been found or could be looked for, unfortunately, this effort yielded no results.
At this point, I was panicking, as anyone whose entire livelihood lives and relies on computers would understand, and prayed that someone had thought to pick it up and call me. For half a day I received no calls and began to lose hope until finally, a message received from a call on my work number popped up on my email notifications system.
Low and behold, the message revealed a kind stranger had noticed my briefcase and taken it upon themselves to call me via the business cards in the briefcase. I tell you, I breathed a sigh of huge relief when I got that message, and was finally able to enjoy my brother’s wedding without any stress which was an incredible gift. I knew my computer was safe.
Later on that next Monday, on a wedding high and looking forward to getting back to work, I stopped by to pick up my laptop from a kind man at a construction site on Oak Avenue in Big Rapids, who I thanked voraciously. I never got his name, but I will never forget what he did for me. I went back to work that day with a determination like no other.
As I write this from my computer, I’m grateful for humanity and the thoughtfulness of strangers to look out for me. In a time when there’s so much division and anger in the world, it feels good to know that people can still be good to one another. I came away from the situation with a new appreciation for the community I’m about to move to.
Thank you to the individual who saved my work week. You’ve inspired me to use my saved computer to keep working for you and the rest of the community, and to do my best to keep an eye on my briefcase. Even the smallest acts of kindness can go unnoticed, this one certainly did not.
