Matt Komprood, owner of Fritz Nelson Certified Public Accountants, was recently presented with a plaque for outstanding service and dedication by the Russellville, Arkansas, chapter of Disabled American Veterans, for doing the nonprofit’s federal tax returns for the past six years. DAV assists veterans filing for Veteran’s Affairs benefits and provides rides to and from hospital visits.

“It was nice; certainly not something that you would expect,” Komprood said.

For Komprood, it was a family connection that got him involved with the group. His father is Harry Komprood, the Senior Vice Commander and past Commander of the chapter, located between Fort Smith and Little Rock. Harry Komprood, a retired member of the U.S. Airforce, served at Grand Forks Air Force Base during the Flood of 1997. When he retired, he moved to Arkansas, a state where he also had served, for the climate. Matt Komprood decided to stay in Grand Forks and took over Fritz Nelson in 2010.

“When I took over as commander down here, I asked him about doing our taxes, to make sure everything's good and we stayed above board and followed the rules,” Harry Komprood told the Herald. “He agreed, and I knew since he was my son he wasn't going to charge us; anyway, he better not."

For Matt Komprood, taking on the work was simple. He works on federal returns for local nonprofit groups, so the paperwork is the same. North Dakota and Arkansas don’t require state returns, he said, so he didn’t need to learn a new set of tax rules. Matt Komprood said he will continue to work with the DAV group, even if the commander isn’t his father.

“If he retired as being commander this year, I will probably be working with a different person,” he said.

In his leadership role for the DAV, Harry Komprood has helped to grow participation in the chapter to 500 members. The chapter serves veterans in the Russellville area and beyond, some of whom drive for up to four and a half hours for assistance.

“We have a motto down here that we served our country; now, we serve our veterans,” Harry Komprood said.
