The Philadelphia Eagles placed tight end Jason Croom on injured reserve, as first noted by Aaron Wilson.
Croom reportedly suffered a “significant right patella tendon injury” during the Eagles’ preseason loss to the New England Patriots. It didn’t look good for Croom when the entire team came out on the field to comfort him before he was carted off the field. Now we officially know his season is over.
Croom wasn’t a strong contender to make the Eagles’ 53-man roster but his absence is notable. The Eagles were already looking thin (by training camp standards) at tight end with Tyree Jackson expected to be out for 8-to-10 weeks. The only healthy players at the position include Zach Ertz, Dallas Goedert, Richard Rodgers, and Jack Stoll. And the Eagles likely don’t want to play Ertz or Goedert much — if at all — in the preseason finale this week.
Thus, in related news, the Eagles recently brought in free agent tight end Cary Angeline for a visit. Angeline is an undrafted rookie free agent who originally signed with the Arizona Cardinals but got waived 11 days ago. The Eagles could look to sign the Chester Springs, PA native to help them fill some practice and preseason reps this week.
With Croom going to IR and Angeline potentially replacing his spot, the Eagles’ roster will be at 85. NFL teams must get down to 80 players ahead of 4:00 PM Eastern on Tuesday, August 24.
In other news, the Eagles waived Luke Juriga off injured reserve with an injury settlement. The Eagles previously waived/injured Juriga last week. He’s now a free agent available to sign with any team. It’s possible he rejoins the Eagles down the line if he remains unsigned.
