DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University football team closed out its 2021 fall camp with a low-key, but focused, two-plus hour workout on a beautiful Sunday morning at Huskie Stadium.
Practicing in shorts and helmets following Saturday's scrimmage, the Huskies worked on the fundamentals, spent a good bulk of the day on special teams and threw in a brief mock game in the middle of practice to slow things down a bit physically but keep the guys in it mentally.
Following an extra point/field goal session, NIU head coach Thomas Hammock had the offense and defense line up on each sideline to close out practice with some conditioning, which has happened several times during camp. The extra conditioning is not meant as a punishment.
"We have to keep putting them in those situations where they continue to fail and see how they can progress," Hammock said. "That's what we did today. We conditioned them. We're going to keep conditioning them for those moments that when you do get tired, you don't lose the details of your work."
During the last two weeks of practice, Hammock has seen the team's playmaking ability, on both sides of the ball grow.
"We have guys that can make plays, that have confidence that they can make plays," he said. "The quarterback has confidence in the players. Defensively, we got confidence that they can take the ball away, they can create turnovers, they can create havoc-type plays to get off the field.
"I think for us, that's going to be the name of the game. We've got be able to run the football, we've got to stop the run, protect the ball on offense get turnovers on defense."
With classes beginning tomorrow, the Huskies will be faced with a new set of challenges, balancing classwork with football and excelling at both.
"The challenge now is handling the distractions, everything that is not football that you have to make sure you do to the utmost," Hammock said. "We don't want a little thing to become a big thing. We want to make sure we handle our business off the field so we can focus when we get on the field."
NIU opens the season at Georgia Tech on September 4 before welcoming fans back to the stands at full capacity in Huskie Stadium beginning with the home opener versus Wyoming on September 11.
