Say goodbye to bland meals and frequent grocery runs, because here is a list of herbs you can grow at home.

Whether cooking is your forte, something you are working on doing more often (check out these blogs for inspiration!), or something you do very rarely, most people will agree that using fresh herbs will yield a much better tasting dish than dehydrated ones. Do not, however, make the mistake of not using any at all, though. Say goodbye to bland meals and frequent grocery runs, because here is a list of herbs you can grow at home. Better yet, these herbs can all be grown indoors, so it is suitable for most people, even if you do not have a backyard. It is also much easier than growing it outside and can be done year-round for those who live in colder climates.

10. Oregano

Oregano is a kitchen staple herb for many nationalities and is used for many different recipes. Not only does it add a punch of flavor, but it is known to be extremely healthy as well! It is rich in antioxidants, which could, in turn, help with preventing cancer depending on quantities consumed and reduce the risk of bacteria and viruses. There is not enough research at the moment to say for sure, but antioxidants are usually very good for your health.

9. Rosemary

The earthy herb Rosemary pairs so nicely with pork, chicken, lamb, potatoes, soups, sauces and so many other dishes, so it is safe to say it is a must-have herb for your home garden! The fragrance is also so comforting on its own, which is a plus while cooking.  Rosemary is also very high in antioxidants, but can also help with digestion and concentration.

8. Thyme

What thyme is it? Herb time! Awful pun, but it had to be used. Now that is out of the way: Thyme has a nice flavor that works well with many different meals and is used so widely around the world in various cuisines. Thyme can also be used as medicine for upset stomachs, sore throats, whooping cough, and bronchitis, to name a few, among a long list of ailments. Another reason to get yourself a Thyme plant is that it is super cute in a pot, and is probably the herb that looks the most like a house plant. How is that for versatility?

Basil should be a staple herb for all to have. You can make your own pesto with basil, which is delicious and equally as healthy. It is also lovely to have in salads, sandwiches, and sauces as it gives foods an excellent taste. Like the other herbs mentioned, basil is also super healthy and can help with digestion, promotes a healthy gut overall, and can be used for its anti-inflammatory properties.

6. Chervil

Chervil is delicious on fish, potatoes, eggs, and vegetables. It can be added to foods from the beginning or added toward the end of cooking to seal flavor in. Chervil can also be thrown into a fresh salad, or used as an ingredient for a tasty dressing. Chervil is also said to help with digestion and contains high amounts of antioxidants.

While mint may not be as versatile, it is so good to have on hand for dessert, drinks, and even salads. Nothing quite compares to the freshness you get when adding mint to foods. A nice plus is that mint smells so lovely and fresh on its own, so if you are growing it indoors, it will double as an air freshener!

If you have ever made a bowl of soup or stew, chances are you have needed a bay leaf for your favorite recipe. Bay laurel becomes an essential herb and not just a lovely extra ingredient. Bay leaves tend to remain extremely stiff even after hours of cooking, so it is not recommended to eat them, but it is not dangerous if you accidentally do.

Chives are an excellent addition to soups, eggs, salads, and many other dishes. It helps in giving a slight kick with its mild onion flavor without being too overpowering. They are easy to trim by using a pair of scissors so that they can be added without difficulty.  

2. Parsley

Parsley is used in so many recipes, from soups to salads, sauces, and meats, making it a must-have herb! It adds a subtle flavor and adds an extra bit of color to plates. You can choose between flat-leaf or curly, but make sure to use Parsley in your dishes.

1. Tarragon

Tarragon has a sweet flavor similar to licorice and is used in salads, as garnish and seasoning for vegetables. It is also known for many medicinal properties. It has been used for years as an aid for insomnia, sore teeth, skin sores, and to decrease inflammation.
