another is too sparing, yet is the poorer.*

WASHINGTON – There’s a season for everything, and Len Schroeder and Julio Zamora saw that now was a season for giving. And they stuck with what they know best.

They decided to try to bring a home gardening opportunity to people isolated at area nursing homes and similar facilities under the declared coronavirus emergency.

Schroeder, a township resident, owns Bloomers Home & Garden Center. Zamora, a Pitman resident, is a nursery specialist. And they had not far to look.

The idea was to bring over growing trays, seeds, and soil. Several facilities were contacted and one, Cardinal Village, signed on.

“I left everything at the front door because I couldn’t go in,” Zamora said. “And the young lady at the desk, she was very thankful. I think they’re going to have a really good time together and get their minds off things.”

At the facilities request, instead of flowers, all the seeds are for herbs like basil and cold weather vegetables like peas.

“Things, basically, you can use,” Zamora said. “And, hopefully, they’ll be able to give to the people who cook there and then they can eat it. That’d be great.”

Zamora has a nursing home ministry through his church in Mantua, Providence Orthodox Presbyterian. This, though, is something new.

“I’d like to call them back and see how they’re doing with,” he said.
