Roxboro Garden Club starts new year on high note - The Courier=Times

Jon Wrenn, co-owner of J&B Herbs, was the guest speaker at Roxboro Garden Club’s Jan. 7 monthly meeting. He shared the history and multiple uses of many herbs. Herbs originated from the Mediterranean, and have been used for medicinal purposes for hundreds of years, including by Native Americans and early settlers. Injuries and illnesses were treated with herbs. Many medicines were extracted herbs, and were used by apothecaries to treat sick patients.

Today, herbs are used in newer ways, including in cooking and for garnishing our foods. This enhances the flavors of our foods, and health experts encourage the use of herbs in our diets for good health results. Herbs can be successfully grown in our gardens or in pots. They do not only flower and add fragrance, but encourage bee and butterfly pollination. The most common herbs are basil, dill, parsley, and mints. Jon shared the names of specific herbs that are suitable for cultivating in our area, and explained his greenhouse gardening techniques. He also discussed safe treatments for healthy plants.

Herbs are also used for their fragrance and beauty in floral arrangements. Drying your homegrown herbs is an easy process, and worth the effort for cooking use. Jon then provided a question and answer time with the club members.

Jon’s herb business is retail, and he supplies his fresh herbs to distributors who sell them to food stores and restaurants, but he also welcomes locals to visit and purchase. The public can visit Jon’s business on Fridays from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 am-2 p.m. If you are planning a visit to J&B, please call Jon at 336-599-0381. J&B is located at 620 Weldon Wrenn Road.
